Joyce Winston a Jackson State University Junior Biology pre-dentistry major from Detroit, MI, defiantly knows a thing or two about what it takes a be a "fashionista". Her unique style speaks for itself. Fashion is her passion and you are sure to know as soon as she walks in the room. She says it all started in her early childhood years.
"Growing up I was bullied because of the way that I dressed", said Winston.
Living in a single parent household with 3 other siblings, "hand-me downs" were the source of most of her clothes. Being in high school wasn't easy because everyone teased her, for her clothes not being name brand and she wasn't wearing the latest trends. This took a toll on her, so she decided to develop her own style. After getting her first job, she was able to afford just enough to change up her wardrobe.
Joyce said, "That summer before 11th grade I changed up my style completely. I created looks with affordable clothing that stood out. I went back to school and got a lot of feedback for my new look. The rest is history. I've been into fashion since I was 15. It is the best thing to happen to me."
Using current events and her personal life story to inspire her. She's into high end clothing she loves to thrift, and be able to wear vintage pieces from the thrift store that's inexpensive but still stylist. Many people get style confused with price. You can be trendy without spending more than 60 bucks. One celebrity that influences her the most is Kendall Jenner.
"I absolutely love her style, she's so bold and chic, that's my area of fashion. My dream in fashion is to style her.", said Winston.
Although fashion is her passion, that isn't what she is attending JSU for. Majoring in pre-dentistry, she hopes to one day become a law attorney and dental hygienist. Helping others is at the top the list so she want to draft policies that will make healthcare accessible and affordable to all.
"My dedication to helping others has humbled me. I want to continue that. I will always be a stylists and designer. That's not a hobby, fashion is me. I don't need a degree to verify my love for it. I do plan on moving to NYC, to pursue both. I'm going to find a good dental school and fashion internship." said Joyce.
This summer Joyce has been working hard on branding her company "Styled By Jo". After changing her Instagram name, and posting fashion post of her unique style, people begin to catch on. And, thanks to all the support and feedback, she decided to make a business page that focuses only on fashion.
Winston said, "I definitely want to brand Styled By Jo. I plan to style people like the First Lady or even Oprah. I don't want to stay at one level. I want to open doors for others who brand themselves. Fame is nice, but branding yourself is something that no one can alter."
While at JSU Joyce plans on starting a fashion and merchandising organization called "Profashionals". There are so many different talented people who attend JSU, such as designers, stylist, models, photographers, editors and even business owners that aren't really recognized. She says, she loves her dear ole college home, but felt something was missing.
"At such a large institution there is so much talent. I want to create a connect for all of us to come together and show that talent. The Profashionals is definitely something that I will bring to JSU before I leave. It's my dream. I want to bring Fashion to Jackson State." said Joyce.
