“The Haves and the Have Nots” star Renee Lawless Goes into Depth about her Character in New Season
Writer:Tenesha Hughes
We got a chance to catch up with Renee Lawless who’s an amazing actress and mostly know for her character “Katheryn Cryer” in Tyler Perry’s The Haves and The Have Nots. We had the opportunity to find out what’s going on in the new season, which will premiere in June 2016.
2. I know that you also can sing, are you looking into starting a career in singing or is it just more of a hobby you enjoy?
Well no, I started out singing. I was in Broadway The Beauty and The Beast, in 2000-2001. I lived in New York for 15 years and made a very good living off singing. I did the Broadway musical Wicked for five years, and I’ve done tons of musical theater. I just did a sold out concert in February in Florida that was more classical music. I also have a gospel cd that my church sells that I did years ago.
So, I’ve been [singing] for a while, as a matter of fact when we finish our interview I have a voice lesson (starts laughing.) I’m not going to be a concert artist, but it doesn’t mean that I [will] rule it out if someone wants me to come sing for them. It’s just that music was a focus so long now I’ve kind of shifted over to really concentrating in to television, but music will always be there and is always there and I’m always singing.
3. Was it hard transitioning from live plays to film and television?
Actually the hardest thing really wasn’t the transition from stage to television because acting is acting, it’s just the size of your audience. It is a whole different set of rules, which was a new way of learning. I had already been familiar with it because I done my research, but to go from stage to a series regular on television is like bam! I had to learn a different vocabulary where as stage was second nature to me, I don’t think about things. Whereas in the first year of The Haves and Haves Nots, during the first season of shooting, I had to think differently, I had to use different words and learn different terminologies. Then slowly it started becoming second nature. So, that was the biggest shift.
4. How is it working with Tyler Perry?
Well, not only is he a remarkable human being and I can’t emphasis that enough. He is an actor’s director, I’ve learned so much from him and I don’t necessarily [know] about television. But, he’s had so much stage experience; he knows how to talk to me to get what he needs in my language. He knows what to get from the actor and direct them in a way that he’ll get a really good end result. I admire him, his work ethic, he is a lovely person and he is a respectable person and it’s nice to be respected and see how he treats others as well. He is the hardest workingman that I’ve met in my life in any profession period. I don’t know when he sleeps, he spends 16 to 18 hour days when we’re filming and then gets on a plane on a Friday afternoon and for the last two years he’s been [doing] plays on weekends. I’m honored to not only know him, but to call him a friend.
5. We are getting to see a different side of “Katheryn” this season, can you tell me what made “Katheryn” so different this season than the others?
In the past she’s been on an emotional roller coaster, but you are seeing the power come out in this season. You’re going to see the fighting back, people already got a glimpse of it these past few months. But, when we come back in June, I don’t want to say that she’s going to be free of pain sadly, but she’s going to handle a lot of stuff [and] it’s going to be monumentally different. In the finale, her husband who always seems to be in charge says to her “ Let them see who Katheryn Cryer really is” and that’s exactly what you’re going to see. You are going to see the person that has always been there, but she’s been keeping it hidden from the audience.
6. She is such an intense and emotional woman would say that you can relate to her in any type of way?
Yes, a little more in the earlier seasons than now. I relate to her that she’s a woman who gets lonely, she gets frustrated with her appearance. I related to her in her inter turmoil, her frustration with her children and husband. The things that the public would’ve never seen, I think I related to that because I get home sometimes and those struggles are real for a lot of women. The big different between “Katheryn” and I, I think our priorities are the same but they’re just in a different order. I am a Christian, so I feel my moral compass of my life is based on my faith, “Katheryn” is not. So, while I might have the same values, they’re going to be in a completely [different] view from her.
7. Do you have any other projects coming up this year?
Yes, I go back tomorrow and film the new season of The Haves and The Haves Nots for next year, so that’s the biggest thing on my plate. I have a couple of speaking engagements that I’m doing at a few women organizations. I actually have a possible film thing, which I can’t talk about, but it should be coming up possibly soon. It is in the works.

Lil Mama Talks New Mixtape "Take Me Back"
Writer: Tenesha Hughes
Lil Mama is back and just released a new mixtape entitled Take Me Back. The rapper/dancer excitedly talks about the inspiration for her mixtape and it’s name as well as future acting projects.
Can you tell me about you new mixtape Take Me Back
Well, Take Me Back is a mixtape inspired by the golden era of hip hop, which people really took to lyricist and melody. Hip Hop and R&B started to fuse at some point in the early 90s, [which was] interesting because when Hip Hop started, they pretty much were taking R&B records rhythm and blues and turning them into hip hop records. Half the people were rapping on melodies that were turned into Hip Hop beats. The R&B element of it was embraced and that’s something that inspires me and that’s why I indulged in it. I feel like the element of Hip Hop and R&B right now sounds the same [and] I just wanted to go back to that element.
Will this be more up beat tempo music?
There is an array of tempos through the track. I think it pretty much starts off more mid tempo and ease our way to more up-tempo type of vibe. So its a little bit of both I would say.
What keeps you motivated in this industry?
My motivations comes from God, being a spiritual being and being in an obedient space. I can hear God and see him through signs and all types of things that push me and remind me of what I’m suppose to be doing, and where I’m suppose to be. Even through family, friends, fans and supporters or even people who are in the reverse of that. It’s all motivation because when someone pushes you or points out things to you that you know is great, other people may envy those things or try to oversee it, because they can’t do it. It’s really is inspirational; to keep going and stay motivated especially with having younger siblings. When I was their age, I had people tell me whatever it was that I was doing to keep doing it or fuel what I was already into, if it was something positive and pushing me in that direction. So, I want to be the person to do that for them. It is so many different things, God being first, my family and people who support me.
Who are some artists that you would like to work with that you haven’t already?
That’s a good question. I would like to work with Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole, I like Tink; she’s fire. Jazmine Sullivan, that’s my girl I think she has extraordinary talent. Queen Latifah, in television and music, but more so since she’s focused on the film stuff now I would love to work with Queen Latifah. I would work with Ice Cube in film, Will Ferrell, Cameron Diaz, it’s so many people that I’m fans of in music and in movies and all of the arts that I partake in. So, it’s some collaborations that have yet to happen.
Since you mentioned movies can we look forward to you getting more into acting?
Of course, definitely looking into getting more into acting. I’m allowing my music to kind of segway right now into more acting and things like that. I just want to be able to do what I love, but focus on it and give the fans the best quality. I think it is a big responsibility when you expand your gift in front of the world on a platform for everyone to see. The expectations are higher and to whom much is given much is expected or required. It’s taken time for me in music and movies, I’ve always been a huge fan of all things that I do being music, singing, rapping, dancing and acting as well. I want to make sure I give my all and my best and focus completely in that moment.
How are you preparing for the New Year?
Well, I’m already in my new year’s resolution because I have already taken the time out to focus on one thing at a time, to give it my all and best at it. Putting out this EP style mixtape is in some way an album to me because I’m giving quality work to my fans. I haven’t put out an album in 7 years. In finding completion and growth of whatever that phase was throughout these 7 years. So, as I move on to the next thing, be it acting or seminars, speaking to young people or opening my own dance school. I’ll be able to do those things one-step at a time as opposed to trying to do so many things at once. I’m learning the process of creating and releasing and it’s working out well for me, walking into the New Year, I’m feeling ready
What motivational or encouraging words would you give a young girl who wants to follow in your footsteps and get to the point you are now?
Stay focused. There may be other people that you want to work with or are inspired by, but allow it to happen organically. Don’t look for that immediately, focus on yourself and keep your head down in that space of pushing and by the time you look up, you won’t believe where you are because of all the hard work and all the seed that you’ve sewn. Not only in your career, but in life stay motivated, stay focus and most importantly stay encouraged.
How can fans reach you?
I want to let the fans know to subscribe to my website, it is iamlilmama.com because that’s a way they’ll be able to keep up with me this year. We’re going to be doing a lot of things this year and they’ll be able to come to my home, Lil Mama house. On Instagram it’s @lilmama, my Facebook and Twitter is Lil Mama and my SoundCloud is iamlilmama.com. These are all the outlets in, which my fans can find me dropping quotes or photos and videos and things like that.

Interview with Danisha Wrighster of "#OWNShow"
Writer: Tenesha Hughes
Danisha Danielle Wrighster’s story of rising from a single mother to a multi-millionaire and host of #OWNSHOW will inspire anyone to push through adversity. Danisha spoke with SHEEN about her journey, her current role on OWN and what it takes to become a self-made millionaire.
How did you go from being a single mother to the CEO of your company?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles and I attended UCLA when I was 16 years old. I graduated with a degree in Communications and a specialization in Business and Administration. I started working at a commercial real estate company as an accountant and I saw the huge checks that were given to brokers and I became interested in the business. I started applying and studying for my license when I found out I was pregnant unexpectedly. I finished getting my license but during my pregnancy, my daughter’s father was diagnosed with cancer and he died when she was 10 weeks old. I was in a really bad place, as you can probably imagine. I started working at a real estate company as a broker which was against all of the advice of everyone around me, but I did it and it worked out because I was able to make a great living from it.
What advice would you give someone who may be feeling like giving up on something they really want?
Well, I think if you give up then you are choosing to lose. You have automatically taken yourself out of the game. If you want to win and get somewhere, at some point you are going to have to take a risk and try and possibly fail. The thing about failure is that it is a part of success. The most successful people in the world fail, but they don’t look at it as the end, they look at it as an opportunity to shift.
You were a judge on “Home Free” this past summer, can you tell about the show?
The show is on FOX television where nine couples are competing to win a dream home. They are doing self projects on distressed homes and they are doing huge renovations with the help of Mike Holmes and his team. Each week somebody is eliminated and I come in as a real estate judge and help Mike make a decision on who gets eliminated. On most other shows when someone gets eliminated they lose, go home and they don’t win. Well, on this show everybody wins because each home that gets renovated the couple that is eliminated wins
How did you become involved with OWN and as the host of Oprah Winfrey’s #OWNShow?
I love all things Oprah, I subscribed to her channel, website and social media religiously. I had a really great opportunity to audition for the show. We had a 6 month testing process and it worked out. I have the opportunity to interview Oprah’s magazine expert, home personalities and guest who appear on the network, and some of her favorite authors etc. The show gives tips on how to live your best life.
What are 5 tips for someone who would like become a self-made millionaire?
1. Everything starts with vision, even if your vision right now can’t be huge and grand. Starting from where you are to where you want to go next week or within a month, that is one step and when you start growing your vision will start growing.
2. Get a mentor in whatever field or industry you are most interested in. Have someone you can ask certain questions, because you don’t know, what you don’t know. Everybody needs a mentor.
3. Take a look at your “parking brake”. What I mean by that is, there are certain things about us like our personality, how we feel about ourselves and what we want that stop us from achieving more. Whether it is procrastinating, feeling a lack of self worth or unhealthy attitudes towards money. A big thing is you should really take a look at your “parking brake”, because there is no point in just grinding, grinding, grinding and just burning your brakes out.
4. Another thing I would do is know that at some point you are going to have to take a risk. That is what stops most people, is they are not ready to take a risk.
5. Ask God to help you. Not everybody believes in God but my faith in God has helped me through the toughest times. I believe whatever that time is, if you lean on that and you keep putting one foot in front of the other, you will find a way to become successful.

JD Dillard talks Directorial Debut with New Movie Sleight Starring Jacob Latimore, Stacey Dash and More (Sheen Magazine Article)
Writer: Tenesha Hughes
How did you get involved with Sleight?
My writing partner and I put together a script at the beginning of this year [and we wanted] to do something that was significant with all the things we love working with. With Sleight, we wanted to take something that we could bring back down and make grounded and make a small enough project that we would be able to make ourselves.
What is Sleight about?
Sleight is about a kid who is super smart, but because of his circumstances, he has been forced down a road that he never would have chosen for himself. He loves a form of street magic and is caught up in the David Blaine world of magical forming. After his mom’s passing, [he] needed to find a way to keep a roof over his and his little sister Tina’s head. [So] he turned to drug dealing and the Los Angeles party scene. He [still] tries to maintain his innocence by keeping his first passion of magic alive.
Who are some of the stars in this film?
The lead of our movie is Jacob Latimore who was apart of The Maze Runner and Black Nativity. He is the front line for our movie and around him we have Dulè Hill from Psych and Seychelle Gabriel who is on Falling Skies and we have a small, but very important role played by Stacey Dash. Brandon Johnson from UCB Comedy is also apart of the movie. So it’s a very collective group of people, which has been super fun.
Do you think this film will change people’s prospective about magic?
That is something we are very interested in doing. I think it is really easy for magic to come off as a little cheesy, but we are really looking for a fun and contemporary and cool approach to that kind of art. We have been working with Fontaine Cards, [which is] run by this awesome kid name Zach Mueller. It is definitely our goal in trying to make it cool.
Where did the filming take place?
Right here in LA, Beverly Hills and downtown.
When is the movie set to hit theaters?
We will be gearing up for all of the festivals here in the beginning of next year, so that is something we will find [out] in the beginning of 2016.
Jason Little Talks NEw Single "Let Me Know" and Being an Independent Artist (Sheen Magazine Article)
Writer: Tenesha Hughes
We were first introduced to Jason Little as a member of Keith Sweat’s group Ol’ Skool and since then, he’s been working as an independent artist. We spoke to the R&B singer about his career, single “Let Me Know” and new EP Love Games.
How old were you when you decided to pursue music?
When I really got serious about it, I was about 19 or 20. I decided to go hard for it.
So you were a young child singing around the house?
Exactly! Singing around the house and in high school. Actually, when I was in high school we were silly. We would sit around the lunch table and act like preachers and sing. That’s when people started saying, “dang how long have you been singing?” I would say, “I don’t sing.” Then after more people heard me and continued to ask, I started to really get into it.
I know you were a member of Keith Sweats’ Group “Ol’ Skool” on Universal Records, how was it for you transitioning to an independent artist?
It was hard because I always liked groups and [I liked] seeing groups. I felt real secure and confident having three other guys on stage. When I went solo, it was very hard because now I have to sing by myself, but it was a good move. I would have done it a lot sooner because sometimes singing in a group can hold you back when everyone isn’t on the same page and don’t move the same. So, I learned that the hard way and I spent a lot of years wanting to be in a group when I should’ve been a solo artist.
You have such a soulful voice. Who are some of your musical influences?
Whew, it’s a lot of them. Charlie Wilson, Gerald Levert, Jodeci, Jagged Edge, Donny Halthaway, Stevie Wonder. I just really love soulful people and where I’m from (St. Louis) is a really soulful place.
What was the experience like for you being on tour with Trey Songz and opening up for him?
It was lovely. When I met Trey, I didn’t know he was signed and when I found out, his manager asked me what I was doing and I had just moved to New York looking for work. He told me Trey signed with Atlantic Records and was going on tour and he asked me if I wanted to join, so of course I said yes. We started touring and [performing at] Showtime at the Apollo and Soul Train. I had fun and I learned a lot. Even though I did the thing with Ol’ Skool, I learned a lot from watching Trey and being with his crew.
Can you tell me a little bit about your single “Let Me Know”?
It is a true story about a relationship I was in. One day, I was in my apartment sitting on the floor with my guitar and it’s like the melody and cords just came to me and I went with it. It’s about a guy wondering if his girl is cheating [and] he doesn’t know for sure, but he’s trying to figure it out. It really gets to the point where it’s driving him crazy and he’s starting to lose it. So he’s saying let me know if you are cheating, just let me know and I’ll leave you alone. He just wants her to be honest with him.
What else can we expect from you this year?
I am pushing “Let me Know” and I am about to shoot a video for it hopefully by the end of this month or early August. I’m working on that and then I’ll submit it to all the networks. I am also working on new material and a EP called Love Games. I’m going to get that out and shoot a video for it and just really push it. I am also doing live performances; I’ll be in a city near everyone soon.
OSTO Beauty Jearlean Taylor Talks Being Diagnosed with Cancer at a Young Age and Pursing Modeling (Sheen Magazine Article)
Writer: Tenesha Hughes
Jearlean Taylor has been battling cancer for the majority of her life. She has endured misunderstandings, while feeling like a social outcast due to her health issues. However, her battle has transformed her into a successful model and a all-around strong woman.
Where were you born and raised?
Baltimore, Maryland.
How old were you when you found out you had cancer?
I was actually about 2 1/2 years old.
Can you tell me a little bit about the kind of cancer you developed at such a young age?
Yes sure, it is a very rare form of cancer and it’s called Rhabdomyosarcoma (MRS). It is a cancer that is in your connective tissue so in common areas. Rhabdomyosarcoma, can be in your head, neck, your urinary reproductive organs like your arms, legs, but I had vaginal cancer. It was discovered while I was outside playing with my older sister and she noticed that I had blood on my clothes around my vagina area. She asked if I had fallen or hit something and she called my dad and mom and they rushed me to the hospital. They ran a lot of test and found out I had a cancer tumor in my vagina area, around the reproductive organs.
I know having cancer is a battle in itself, but can you tell me how was it for you as a child with this cancer and having to wear ostomy bags, and is that still affecting you till this day?
Because of where the cancer spread, I was forced to have an ostomy. An ostomy is referred to as a surgical opening in your body where you have a discharge of body waste, whether it is urine or stool and I had both. They kind of sit over or around the stone and collect the output of either the stool or the urine. So, I actually had an ostomy bag since I was 3-years-old.
How was it for you growing up and having to attend school?
Well, you know I was 3-years-old. So pretty much during that time my parents and my older sister took care of me. As far as changing my bags and making sure they were changed correctly and things like that. It was difficult especially in elementary school. Kids don’t understand, they are just being children, but at the same time I was kind of teased by peers. [They would say things like] “I smell something” and sometimes saying, “Oh I heard she wears a bag.” So, during that time it was difficult because I just wanted to be treated normal and just play. My sisters and brothers treated me normal, but at the same time I still had to go to school and interact with my peers. When they didn’t understand, it caused me to exclude myself and be to myself. You ask yourself, why do I have to wear these bags. It wasn’t until I got a lot older that my parents sat down and talk with me about why I had to wear them. It still didn’t make it easy because I was younger then so, I went through a period during those years just trying to be accepted.
As far as growing and having low self esteem how did it affect you with connecting to the opposite sex?
I kept myself busy with other things. I was very active in high school; I played sports. You try to find things that will occupy your mind. Of course boys were attractive to you, and as you get older they are attractive to you. At the same time in my mind I’m thinking, how am I going to explain having an ostomy and for a very, very long time I didn’t. I mean, I got along with boys and they liked me, but I just tried to exclude myself. You grow up and you have little boyfriends around the neighborhood, but it won’t really amount to anything. Not until I got into high school I had a boyfriend and it wasn’t until much, much later that I even told him about having ostomy bags and my medical history and things like that. He understood, but at the same time boys are going to be boys, so that relationship in high school ended. Then you continue on as an adult and I was married for 14 years, so when I came to the realization that it is what it is either they accept me or they don’t. I found that person who accepted me for me along with my long medical history and he ended up being my husband. Now, I am divorced for three years, but my sickness or my medical history had nothing to do with it. That is totally different but I was able to find love and God put that person in my life that understood all that came along with Jearlean.
So I think that it is a great thing that you are motivating people and inspiring people with your story and I know that you are a motivational speaker and a writer. Tell me about your book?
The title of my book is called Pretty Girl Blues, it is really how I felt most my life. A pretty girl, but inside she had these blues. I went through periods of depression, suicidal thoughts and feeling rejected and left out. What happened was I had a mentor in my life and she told me about journal writing. While I was home from another surgery, I started writing about anything I ever felt about my sickness and ostomy bags [and] I was surprised about what I wrote. It is an autobiography, but I just talk about how it affects my life, work, school, church, and my friends, relationships, my marriage, and modeling. My journal ended up being my book Pretty Girl Blues.
I notice on the cover of your book you have the bible verse Jeremiah 29:11. What is special about that scripture?
Yes, that scripture talks about “For I know the plans I have for you, thoughts of hope in a good future”. So, I always explain to people that while I was in my mother’s womb God knew the plans he had for me. Even though I was going through a sickness I never blamed God, my parents or nobody. What happened was, life happened and it happens to all of us. It just so happened I developed cancer. Even then God knew the plans he was going to have for me, he knew cancer would come, he knew this and that would happen. He knew this book would come and he is giving me plans and hope of a good future. I am following the plans he has for me and my faith plays a major part of my internal healing.
Where can your book be purchased?
You can purchase the book directly on my website and it iswww.prettygirlblues.com.
What made you want to go ahead and fulfill your dream of becoming a fashion model?
I started modeling late, I was in my early 30’s. I was walking through the mall one day and a woman there was passing out some flyers. This modeling studio was having open house and they were like “We would like for you to come sit down with us and hear what we have to say. I was hesitant for a while, but I went and I sat down and listened to everything they had to say about the business. That is when I decided I was going to go ahead and do it. My talent spoke for itself so I really prospered going to workshop classes and just being the best model that I can be, despite of what the modeling industry says. You know you have to be certain size and do this, but I proved different I have been modeling for over 16 years with and ostomy bag. So, I just found a way to make it happen and with God’s help it happened and it is still a passion of mine.
Why did you decide to create your own modeling company?
Yes, I own my own modeling company. It is a Christian based modeling company called J & Company Christian Modeling. It is Christian based and our motto is “we build, train and develop from the inside out.” I said, let me start a company where we are not discriminating against anything; height, weight, size, or ethnic background; everyone is welcomed. This year we celebrate 10 years, so it has definitely been a blessing and our focus is on building self-esteem, whether you want to make modeling a career or if you want to just do it as a hobby or you just want to feel good about yourself.
What are some last final words you would want to tell someone who is feeling like giving up?
I would always go back to, in this life we are going to have trials and tribulations, things that will happen that is just what we call life. What I would say to them is don’t let your circumstances or your situation dictate who you are. Don’t allow it to dictate your future because all things are possible. You just have to believe in yourself, believe that you are an overcomer [believe] you are a survivor. A lot of times our story is not just for us, it is for other people as well. So, rather you’re going through something or what ever it may be, tell your story, because we all have a story tell.

Certified Personal Trainer/Nutritionist Elizabeth Morrell Shares How She Lost 115 lbs (Sheen Magazine Article)
Writer: Tenesha Hughes
After losing 115 lbs, Elizabeth became a Certified Personal Trainer and Nutritionist and now she’s sharing how she developed “superhuman abs.”
Where are you from?
I was originally born in Texas, but I turned 18 in San Diego and I have been in California for over 20 something years.
What made you want to start losing weight?
Well, the first step for me was when I had to get my gallbladder removed, but you would think it would be because I wore a size 24! I took it upon myself to start investigating what the gallbladder uses are in the body. It is basically the trash can so I had eaten so much trash [that I had to get it removed.] When I woke up [the next day], I started on my journey.
What steps did you take to help you lose weight?
It was my diet. I’ve been an athlete my whole life, even at size 24, but I was just maintaining that size 24 because I didn’t change my eating habits. I called (after gallbladder surgery) rehab because I had to recognize that I was addicted to food. I took those three months to really concentrate on my diet and I went to nutrition classes and learned how to eat properly.
Growing up in Texas we ate fried foods, rice and beans; even our vegetables had fat from bacon or ham hocks so, it was very difficult to get my eating under control. Once I got that under control I learned how to actually make a proper, balanced plate and it was really a piece of the puzzle that clicked.
How many days do you workout a week?
I workout almost everyday, but I use to only go about three days a week or every other day.
For someone who is trying to lose weight, what is a good balance meal to eat throughout the week?
I eat a lot of seafood. I’ll have a nice grilled piece of salmon or you can have chicken; add brown rice and vegetables and that’s a very nice balanced plate. It has to be proportioned. You have to have more protein then you would have more carbs. When I say carbs I am talking complex carbs, which are your vegetables. I cringe when people say they don’t eat carbs, I don’t even know how you can function without eating them! Your body needs your carbs; it doesn’t need the bad carbs, which is the white stuff like bread and white rice, but we do need our good carbs. People make the mistake of thinking you only eat a little bit of food when dieting.
Would you say spinach is better?
Absolutely, I make salads now with spinach or kale (stay away from iceberg lettuce) and then you can add your protein like chicken or fish. I love putting pecans, walnuts, cashews, almonds and you can add fruit like apples and strawberries. I don’t use any dressings, I make my own out of olive oil and vinegar or olive oil and lemon juice and season it with salt and pepper and girl it make you want to slap somebody!
How many times a day should you eat?
You should eat at least five to six meals a day and eat every three hours. For example: when you wake up in the morning, make sure you have a real breakfast. (I have oatmeal.) Then, three hours later have some sort of snack like apples and peanut butter or cheese and crackers. Three hours later have your lunch. (Try a salad.) Three hours later have a protein shake or another snack. Then have a nice dinner.
I am so sick of people saying don’t eat after 6 o’clock or don’t eat after 7 o’clock. Your body is still working and you need to fuel your body. Get like a handful of nuts or cheese because your body is like a machine and it needs the fuel in order to run, like a car needs gas and oil so they go hand in hand.
You can’t do one without the other, as I have proved so many years of just working out. That is one thing we do, we think we can eat whatever we want and just workout. If you are trying to maintain that great, but if your trying to make a change you have to change your nutrition. That is one of the most important aspects that we over look. It’s 80% in the kitchen and 10% working out and 10% genetics.

Todd Williams Talks About His Role In New Movie San Andreas (Sheen Magazine Article)
Writer: Tenesha Hughes
Todd Williams is no stranger when it comes to gracing your television screens. He has starred in a number of popular television series including FOX Bones, Chicago Code, USA’s In Plain Sight and many more. This year he is starring along side Dwayne Johnson as Marcus Cowlings in the highly anticipated film San Andreas. The film follows a story of four LA fire department and rescue team members who saves lives when an earthquake in California strikes.
“The story itself is about how the San Andreas fault in California goes crazy and creates the biggest earthquake in record history. Dwayne Johnson’s character Ray is in the position where he is away from his family. His daughter has gone up to San Francisco on a trip and his ex wife is somewhere else as well, so he takes it upon himself to save them before anything bad happens”, said Williams.
Williams began his career around age 11 or 12 acting in church plays while growing up in the big city of New York. He decided to get a manager while attending a performing arts school in Manhattan, NY, which began his acting career.
“This year is my 20th year I have been in the business and I just love the fact that I have been able to sustain myself, meet great people, travel and discover things about myself. I’m super thankful for that”, said Williams.
San Andreas is Todd’s first major film role and although he has worked on numerous TV series, film was a whole different ball game.
“In television things are a lot faster and what I have found working on film with this magnitude is that it gets stretched out. With television, we’ll do like six scenes a day maybe and with this we were doing one scene for a week, but I really enjoyed that process. Acting is a journey and you have to keep your eye on prize. Sometimes I can get so focused on where I want to be that I miss where I’m at, so I have to teach myself to be more in the present”, said Williams.
San Andreas is set to hit theaters May 29, 2015 be sure to get your ticket and watch this action packed film.

Exclusive Interview: Chocolate City's Star Robert Ri'chard (Sheen Magazine Article)
Writer: Tenesha Hughes
We had the opportunity to interview the star of the sexiest movie of the summer. Veteran actor Robert Ri’chard has made a name for himself with his well-known roles in Cousin Skeeter and One on One and now he is the lead character in Chocolate City. In the movie, Robert plays a struggling college student who becomes a stripper to help the family. Chocolate City hits theater’s this Friday, May 22nd.
How did you get involved with the movie Chocolate City?
The writer Jean Claude La Marre reached out directly through another producer and got my personal information. I was doing another film on the east coast when my agent called me like three hours later and said get on the first flight back to Los Angeles. I went back to LA, started rehearsal on a Saturday when I landed, then started filming on Sunday. We shot the movie pretty much 15 days straight.
What is your role in the movie?
I play the lead character Michael and he is a young college guy doing anything he can to help his family. He was flipping burgers, then decided to take a second job as a bartender only to find out that it was amateur night at a male strip club. His brother convinces him to get on stage and he becomes a big hit. Then we sort of watch the roller coaster he goes through in the male dancing adult entertainment world.
I’m sure you are aware of the comparisons to Magic Mike, what would you say makes this movie different?
I am a big of Channing and I am a big fan of Magic Mike and I think it is an awesome movie. Our movie is exciting, entertaining and it is so much fun. Everyone, the ladies and the guys, everyone is going to enjoy it. We have fight scenes, we have the comedy, which is through the roof and then obviously the dancing is off the chart and really sexy. Everyone likes coffee and chocolate and that’s what we got.
How was it working alongside some of the other amazing and wonderful actors?
Absolutely amazing! I have loved Vivica since she was on Out All Night back in the day and she is literally one of my top five most gorgeous women on the planet. So, that was really exciting for me to be on set with her. Tyson Beckford is like a brother to me and we have gotten along for a long time. The first time I ever walked the runway was in Miami 15 years ago and I walked with Tyson, so it was kind of cool to be able to do a whole film with him. Then Deray Davis and I have so much chemistry, Michael Jai White is amazing in the movie. We got Ginuwine, Carmen Electra; it is just really a star-studded cast and everyone did a super job. I am proud of them.
I know that you show your body a lot in the movie, what were some things you did to prepare and stay fit for this role?
I used this program called High-waist Fit. It is a anytime, anywhere, everyday thing and there is no weight, no gym. When I am on set and we are working 16 hour days, I only have time go home and sleep and get right back on the set. I needed something that was really accessible that I can just use anywhere that is really schedule friendly. There is this program called High-waist Fit, which is like a high intensity workout. Pretty much anybody can do it and you get amazing results. I use it and I got all my friends using it and it is what really builds the body and abs.

Kick- Off Your Morning With Inspiration (Sheen Magazine Article)
Writer: Tenesha Hughes
Inspirational quotes can be found almost anywhere, so why not use the ones seen on your Instagram, Twitter, or maybe your local shopping store to start your morning off in a positive way. Only, this will get you to put down your phone and pick up something motivational and inspirational.
Positive vibes only right? I have a great idea that will put you in a even greater mood when you need it the most. All you have to do is find your favorite inspirational quotes, write them down on a blank sheet paper, fold them up in tiny pieces, then put them inside a empty jar. Mason jars are really a hot item this summer and can be used for things other than just drinking a cool refreshing beverage.
Find a mason jar and make this project fun and entertaining by painting the outside your favorite color and/or write your name on the front. It doesn’t matter how you chose to decorate your jar, just be creative.
Once you are done decorating the outside of your mason jar, it time to gather all the quotes you have written on your paper and place them inside. I would say 20 to 50 quotes would be great to keep you going each and everyday. Try to find quotes that are rich in words, so when you read it you’ll automatically feel eager to take on the world; remember positive vibes only.
Grab your jar and find a place in your house and sit it somewhere you will see it every morning when you wake up. I personally have mine placed right beside my bed on my nightstand, next to my alarm clock. This helps tremendously, because lets face it if you are like me, mornings are not something you look forward to, especially if you are headed to a job or somewhere you just don’t feel like going. But, that is why your inspirational mason jar will come in handy and help bring a much-needed smile to your face first thing in the morning.
Now, you may be asking yourself, why not just look on my phone or social media in the morning to read an inspirational quote? After all, most of us grab our phones first thing in morning before we even get out the bed. Well, this is a great way to take 10 minutes to yourself to feel inspired and become in touch with your inner thoughts. It’s important to step away from the outside world and find time for you!
So, go ahead get started today and see how wonderful your day goes just by adding a little inspiration to your morning routine. Love and Relationships: Long Distance How to Make it Work! (Sheen Magazine Article)
Writer: Tenesha Hughes
Well, from first-hand experience I know it is not easy, but it can be done. Many couples battle with the issues of not being able to see each other every day physically. Of course there is FaceTime, pictures, and plenty of other alternative video apps you can use to help you cope, but it is not the same. Not being able to touch, feel, or kiss whenever you want is really hard to deal with at times.
In long distance relationships, there are many key factors that play a major role in keeping it steady and strong. Communication, faith, trust and loyalty will be needed at all times. In my personal opinion, I would say that communication is the most important because without it there is no relationship at all.
Find different ways to communicate with each other. Of course there are phone calls and text messages which will most likely be the main source, but download other apps to make it a little more fun. For instance my favorite is Glide, it is great for keeping in touch and you do not have to constantly stay on the phone; you can just watch and send videos at your convenience. It helps you feel like your are right there even though you are miles away.
And let’s face it, just because you are in a long distance relationship and you tend to get lonely, does not mean you have to be. Take time for yourself, find a new hobby, read a book, go shopping, or spend quality time with friends and family. Keeping busy is great because it helps you keep your mind off the fact that you are not with your partner physically.
I mean granted it will get rocky at times, but stay positive and finds way to express yourself. If you find different activities to do, you will start having more things to talk about and share with your partner. I suggest that you watch a TV show together or download a game and play it together, this way you are still being connected but in a fun way.
When you are doing different activities you may find that you have things in common that you did not notice before. Also, take time out of your busy day and plan a date to visit each other, because let’s be honest all work and no play can get a little boring. Plan a trip together and enjoy each other’s company. That way when you finally get a chance to see each other it will feel like magic!

What's bugging you about your health?

It’s your health and the Jackson State University Health Center wants you to learn it, know it, and live it.
During the annual fall health forum: What’s Bugging You?, held on Nov. 17, students, faculty and staff gathered in the Student Center to discuss issues surrounding the Ebola virus, influenza, STD’s, HIV/AIDS and health insurance.
The Health Center at JSU provides students access to a variety of outpatient medical services for illnesses and injuries. Campus wide health promotion is also a major focus of the Center.
The panelists for the event included: Dr. Samuel Jones, Director of Health Services at JSU, Dr. Hursie Davis-Sullivan, Associate Physician at the JSU Health Center, Jonathan Robinson, Disease Prevention Specialist at Building Bridges Inc., and Camille Simms, an Affordable Healthcare Insurance Representative.
Jones opened the discussion with facts about the Ebola virus that helped some students gain more knowledge about the virus and dispel rumors about the disease.
“Ebola is a virus that lives in all bodily fluids. It is spread when that fluid comes into contact with another person’s bodily fluid; so that can be breaking of the skin, or through the eye, inside the mouth or gets present in the vaginal fluid,” said Jones
He added: “Some of the symptoms are just like the flu; headache, fever, aching in the muscles and eventually it interferes with the body ability to pump blood. Diarrhea and vomiting are very common symptoms.”
Herbert Allen, a senior computer engineering major from Edwards. Miss., attended the event and was glad the Ebola virus was one of the topics of discussion.
“I wanted to get some insight on some of the topics. I noticed they had quite a few to discuss and the questions I asked got answered and I got some valuable information for it. I was unclear about Ebola and the screening procedures they use for individuals that enter the country and the Director of the Student Health Center clarified my concerns,” said Allen.
Dr. Sullivan talked briefly about the two strains of the influenza virus: A and B. Influenza, or flu, is a respiratory illness that is caused by a virus. Flu is highly contagious and is usually spread by the coughs and sneezes of a person who is infected.
“We typically don’t create a vaccine for these two viruses expect on a yearly basis. So each time you get immunization for influenza, you’re getting protecting from influenza A as well as influenza B. The reason they have to make the vaccine on a yearly basis is because the virus mutates or changes rapidly, so what they may have had the vaccine for last year may not be appropriate for the vaccines strains this year,” said Sullivan.
HIV/AIDS was also a topic discussed during the forum. According to the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) 2013 Health Profile, Mississippi ranked 20th among the 50 states in diagnosis of HIV in the number of HIV diagnoses in 2011.
Robinson dispelled many falsehoods students had about how a person can become infected with HIV like hugging, showering together or sharing the same fork. A person can only acquire the disease from infected persons they have unprotected sex with, share needles with, or mother-to-child transmission.
To know if you have HIV, you must take an antibody test. The test determines if you have been exposed to the virus or not. Only a doctor can diagnose someone with AIDS. For an accurate antibody test reading, wait three weeks to three months after a risky behavior (unprotected sex, needles sharing, etc.) to get tested. If exposed to HIV, this waiting period allows for antibodies to form in your body.
With the second round of deadlines approaching on Dec. 15 to enroll in Affordable Healthcare, Simms shared the 10 essential health care benefits.
1. Ambulatory Patient Services
2. Emergency Services
3. Maternity and Newborn Care
4. Pediatric Services including dental and vision care
5. Rehabilitative services
6. Mental Health/Substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment
7. Preventive/wellness services and chronic disease management
8. Hospitalization
9. Prescription Drugs
10. Lab Services
The Health Center also offered free flu shots for anybody who was interested in taking it.
Christy Gibson, a freshman mathematics major from New Orleans, La., took full advantage of the opportunity.
“I think it is great that JSU is giving free flu shots, because it’s getting really cold and a lot of people are getting sick,” said Gibson.
The University Health Center is located on Prentiss Street, across from the Lee E. Williams Athletics & Assembly Center. For more information, call 601-979-2260.

Jackson State Honors veterans During Annual Program

The Veterans and Military Center partnered with the Metro Jackson Community Prevention Coalition (MJCPC) on Veteran’s Day in a program entitled: “Honoring Our Student Veterans” in the JSU Student Center ballrooms.
Veterans Day, celebrated nationally on Nov. 11, is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, the agreement which ended World War I hostilities between the allied nations and Germany in 1918. Veterans are honored for their service to the United States on this day.
The event began with a posting of colors ceremony by Jim Hill High School J.R.O.T.C, singing of the National Anthem by Jonathan Winters and Antonio Williams, a performance by JSU MADDRAMA Performance Troupe and a special poem read by Kimberly Jones-Ward, Coordinator of JSU VA Benefits and Program Counselor.
The guest speaker for the event was Major DeRitha Barber, a member of the U.S. Army, who shared her personal experience as an African-American female officer, veteran and social-worker in the Army National Guard.
“Day after day they ask me why do you go away, what makes you leave your family. I think that you should stay. My child who is standing at the door clutching her father’s hand and saying with a choking voice, ‘Mommy please don’t go’. I must answer them, I need them to know it is not for the fame or glory or riches that I go, I go for you,” said Barber.
She added: “For all that have a son; for all that have a daughter; for all that have a special loved one; I know that when they hurt or a harmful bullet has settled deep, someone will be there for them to ease them as they sleep. So when you see me pack my bags and leave for land so far away it is not part of heart that has gone astray it is for love of country and freedom duties, but most of all I go to bring them back to you.”
Veleshia P. Williams, MJCPC Director and U.S. Army Veteran Major, encouraged everyone to pause for a moment of silence for all veterans.
“We celebrate Veterans Day the 11th month and the 11th day and at 11 o’clock we pause for a moment of silence for all persons who have sacrificed and fought for our country. As a black female who served in the military for over nine years, I know the heartache it is to leave a family but I know the joy it is when they return. For those who didn’t get to return, we pause and acknowledge and thank them,” said Williams
Shavon Mabory, a senior biology/pre-vet major from Meridian, Miss., is a MSIV member of ROTC at JSU.
“It was very important for me to come today simply because my mother was speaking, but not only that, it is a very honorary moment to be a part of the Veterans Day program and to see all the faces of veterans, future veterans and past veterans. It is a nice experience,” said Mabory.
The JSU Veterans Center was established to improve and enhance the success of student veterans, to help them receive the benefits they deserve, to serve as a liaison between the veteran student community and the University and to increase their academic success.
The center develops and implements outreach programs designed to provide student support services focused on the special needs and requirements of today’s military veterans, service members, dependents and survivors.

Relationships Do Not Have To Affect Your ACADEMIC Success

Are you one of the students who start to feel lonely when it starts to get cold outside? Are you hoping to find a “bae” to keep you warm?
“Cuffing season” has arrived and all I have been hearing are students talking about how they wish they were in a relationship. “Cuffing season” is a phrase that is used when the hot and summer days have ended and the cold and chilly nights have began. The indoor activities have you wanting to be “cuffed” by someone.
Growing up, I was never in a serious committed relationship. In high school I felt I was too young to be tied down. However, in college when you are in your late teenage years and early twenties it is the time to start dating with a purpose. I have always imagined myself being in a serious relationship in college with the person I want to marry. After being in a relationship for five months, I would say that it doesn’t affect your academic success.
According to compusexplorer.com 63 percent of college women hope to meet their spouse in college. Three out of five female college students agree that college is where they hope to meet their mate.
In a recent survey by StudyMode it suggests that while many students have a significant other, their romantic life doesn’t interfere with their grades. The majority of students surveyed said they are prioritizing school over romantic relationships in the long term.
According to the survey, around three quarters of students want to wait up to 10 years after college graduation before getting engaged, and around 40 percent of students said they don’t even expect to meet their future spouse until after college.
Relationships in college can be more work than your actual school work. Do not get too caught up in trying to find a “bae” that you find yourself slipping in your school work. When the long and stressful nights of homework and studying start to kick in, it is the perfect time to study together and get your work done. If you are in a relationship just remember the true reason you came to Jackson State University. It is a must that you stay focused and keep that high GPA.
I feel my generation is too stuck on thinking short term rather than long term. I think social media and modern day music are to blame. Most songs do not really focus on “real love.”
College students get into relationships to receive praise from their peers, and show off their relationships like a trophy. I do not tweet, post pictures or use any form of social media to showcase my relationship.
It is time that we start questioning our self-defeating attitudes and behaviors. Relationships are not the issue, how we respond to media distortions and programmed self-hatred is the issue. We need to reverse the power of media. I am not saying do not be in a relationship while in college, I am saying know your priorities so you won’t fall behind.
Know yourself, know your worth relationships are a bonus. Once we start treating each other with respect and worth thats when we should worry about relationships but until then our main focus should be our matriculation through JSU.

Students Speak out to Get To-Go Boxes Back in Dining Hall

Many students at Jackson State University want the “to-go” option brought back to the Heritage Cafeteria to accommodate their busy lifestyles.
On Oct. 16, the Student Government Association released a survey on Instagram asking students to voice their opinion. The social media post read: “Help Us, Help Y.O.U” Got To-Go Boxes?
Michael Gordon, SGA vice president and mass communications major from Stone Mountain, Ga., hopes the input from students will reverse the current policy of not offering to-go meals.
“We created a survey to get to-go boxes back in the café. It’s a survey for students to voice their opinion. It pretty much just serves as a record of students who find to-go boxes to be useful or not useful. The majority of the students want to-go boxes back so once we get enough students saying yes from the surveys we will be able to get them back.”
Food services at Jackson State are under the operation of SodexoMagic, a premier food contractor in the dining business known for providing a restaurant style dining experience.
Sanford Winfield, SodexoMagic General Manger at JSU, explains why there is no to-go option in place. The problem is a technical one with the card system. He stated that students have unlimited swipes when they come in during the meal period and the system is not set-up to disable the card for a to-go option.
“The meal plans are designed for students to consume as much food as they care to, that’s why we are called “All You Care to Eat” within the dining facility. It’s not a meal plan that says you can have as much as you care to eat and take out the dining hall. In that case one person has the capacity to feed 50 people if they wanted to. I don’t think anybody would perceive that as being fair or ethical use of the meal plan,” said Winfield.
However, many JSU students feel not being able to take food out of the dining hall when they do not have time to sit and eat is an inconvenience.
Deandrae Powell, a sophomore criminal justice major from Flint Mich. is one of those students.
“I feel it’s not good at all because it hurts the student body for students like me who are in the band. I am not able to just go in and pull stuff out like I need to,” said Powell. “Last year I could just go get a to-go box and go straight to practice. Now I have to go in there and get a plate which is a real inconvenience. I can be in my room studying or doing homework because I really don’t have as much time. Some days I just don’t eat because I don’t have time.”
Breann Williams, a sophomore graphic design major from Tulsa, Okla. is another student who would like the to-go option brought back.
“I feel like it’s an inconvenience because I don’t get out until later in the day, especially if I have to work from nine to five or nine to one. It makes it a little harder to come in the café at 12 when they actually have food in there. Plus the lines are a lot longer and you can’t just go when you have a project, midterm or a test or something that you need to study for,” said Williams.
Winfield stated that SodexoMagic and the University are looking into reengineering the card system to include a to-go option. Those students would not be able to come back and eat until the next meal period.
“SodexoMagic simply implements a policy and procedure that the university establishes for their meal plans. The university establishes the cost of the meal plans and determines what the make-up of the meal plan will be. We as the food contractors implement those policies and procedures and they are based on the goals and objectives the university has for the company, so if we receive enough feedback from students saying they want to-go boxes it is a possibility that can happen,” said Winfield.

Don’t get so caught up in all the fanfare of homecoming that you miss out on some of the events that will give you long-lasting memories or miss so much class that you grades suffer. Here are some suggestions to make your homecoming memorable.
1. Attend class
At Jackson State University, students hear over and over again that “Students who attend class tend to pass.” This is so true! Even though there will be many activities held during homecoming week, you have to prioritize and remember your ultimate goal, graduation. Do not be enticed by the live sounds of the Sonic Boom of the South, or the 12 p.m. hotspots if you have a class going on at the same time. Go to class first and then hang out with friends to enjoy the homecoming festivities. Remember, mid-semester examinations are next week. Turn the pages before the “Turn Up”!
2. Attend the Comedy Show
Attending the Homecoming Comedy show is a must every year. The line-up of comedians are always top notch. Some of these comedians are local and just as funny as the ones who have appeared on popular TV shows. The comedy show is always great way to take your mind off school work, relax with friends, and enjoy good laughs.
3. Attend the Homecoming Greek Step Show
Stomping the yard for a year of bragging rights, the step show is entertainment at its best. The spectacle of watching sororities and fraternities battling each other for first place and a year’s worth of bragging rights on campus is exciting to see. Only then will you understand the hard work put into learning these steps.
4. Attend the Yard Fest
This huge event on the Gibbs-Green Pedestrian Walkway is nothing less than amazing. Alumni, current students, employees and the JSU community come together as one big family. Vendors are on hand to sell jewelry, clothes, candles and more. You will meet JSU alumni and see an amazing performance from the Sonic Boom. Sororities and fraternities will be strolling and stepping across the yard. Make sure you are looking your best on this day, because everyone is going to be dressed to impressed. Homecoming gives you an excuse to go all out but make sure you are comfortable this day because you will be doing a lot of walking.
5. Game Time
The homecoming game is the biggest game of the season. From the chants in the crowd to the best half time show of the season, you will experience a JSU game like never before. This year will be especially exciting because it will pit new head football coach Harold Jackson against former coach, Rick Comegy. The homecoming game tailgates are also the best. From barbeque to seafood, the best grill masters in Mississippi are providing all the food favorites JSU fans love. Attending the homecoming game is always the most memorable game of them all because after all, “JSU Rocks the House!”
6. After parties!
There are so many choices of after parties during homecoming. You will find yourself asking which one you should attend, or asking around campus to see which one everyone else is going to. Just make sure you attend at least one because after parties during homecoming are a must. Alumni parties, future alumni parties, Greek parties and the list goes on.
The memories you make during this week will be with you forever and you will definitely look forward to the next JSU homecoming.

Apple Has Rotten Reviews on iCloud & iPhone 6 Plus

The World Wide Web has been on fire for a month with the recently stream of leaked nude photographs of over 60 celebrities. Kim Kardashian, Gabrielle Union and Ariana Grande, are just a few of victims of these celebrity.
On Aug. 31, hackers found out celebrities password information and began leaking numerous nude pictures through iCloud. The pictures have been seen on social sites such as Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr. Hackers continued to release private information, photos, and videos of the women on Sept. 20 and Sept. 26.
According to Apple.com, iCloud is one of Apple’s online storage services that automatically helps keep your phone up to date with apps, documents, notes, and contacts. It also provides easy access to sharing photos, calendars, locations, and tracks your phone if you lose it.
The scandal has caused some students at Jackson State University to think twice before using iCloud. One of these students, William Jenkins, a senior mass communications major from Mobile, Ala., is a faithful Apple user.
“I deleted my iCloud, I don’t trust it with my information. I have used it before to track my phone location and to import photos but, now I’ll just upload my pictures to my computer,” said Jenkins.
JSU is an innovative place for learning that utilizes many Apple products and services including iPads, the Tiger Tech Apple Store, and the newest learning spaces in H.T. Sampson Library, Innovate and Create, which have Apple Mac desktop computers.
Some students are afraid that using Apple products could potentially expose their personal information.
“Personally I think it’s a big controversy because if celebrities can get their information stolen, obviously an ordinary person can get theirs stolen too. It’s not just about pictures, it’s about more personal information such as social security numbers. It can lead to a lot of identity theft in different ways people can have their information taken away so that makes it a big problem,” said Tevin Chapman, a senior accounting major from Hattiesburg, Miss.
Natarajan Meghanathan, an associate professor of computer science at JSU, said hacking is the process of intruding on a person’s computer, phone or user account without their knowledge.
“It can be done to find out sensitive information about the victim. With the growth of social media, hackers monitor some victim’s public posts on social media and attempt to find out their likes and dislikes. Then they start sending emails and phone calls asking them to do things, which ends up revealing more of their private/sensitive information (like credit card numbers), which the hackers could use,” said Meghanathan.
In the midst of all the hacking issues, the newest addition to the iPhone family, the iPhone 6 Plus, is also gaining bad reviews.
The release of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus was one of the most anticipated technology releases this year. Everyone who was an Apple product lover lined up outside of stores to get the new phones. According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple Inc. said they sold more than 10 million new iPhones in the first weekend but soon after all that success a big problem became the main topic, the iPhone seemed to have a bending problem.
“I was very disappointed to hear about the bending issue with the iPhone 6 plus. We pay all this money for a phone only for it to bend,” said Markaiya Francios, a freshman computer technology major from Mendenhall, Miss.
According to iPhoneHacks.com, an Apple support employee has indicated that the company will replace your bent iPhone. It remains to be seen if Apple does anything long term too get the bending and iCloud security problems corrected.

Students express Frustrations Over Parking Issues

Ask students at Jackson State University about parking and most likely you will not hear anything good.
The enrollment rate at JSU increased to over 9,500 students, aided by the out-of-state waivers for students enrolling in the science, technology and engineering fields and free iPads to incoming freshmen.
According to Claude Huddleston, Director of Residence Life, there are more than 2,400 residential students at Jackson State, many of whom have vehicles on campus. The Commuter Student Program, led by Gilda Robinson, reports that approximately 7,000 students commute to JSU every day.
Many students are choosing JSU to meet their educational needs and JSU is working to accommodate these students in all areas, including parking.
“I love that my university is growing and becoming more technology savvy, but we will run into a problem when students are at uproar about not being able to get to class because they can’t find a park,” said Abrianna Brown, a senior education major from Chicago, Ill.
Randle Smith Jr., a senior criminal justice major from Scott, Miss., is also displeased with the parking options on campus.
“I live off campus, so when I come on campus I have to rush to find a parking spot because there is nowhere to park. I literally drive around five or six times in circles searching for available spots, or I have to park really far from the building I need to go into,” said Smith.
The Department of Public Safety began towing cars parked illegally, in reserved spots or without the required decals on Sept. 2., at the owner’s expense.
Some students are hoping the university will build a parking garage to accommodate the lack of parking spots.
“A parking garage will only help us as a university,” said Brown. “Every since I have been going to JSU, I have always had an issue with finding a parking spot. The second week of school, my car was towed and I had to wait till I had enough money to get it back.”
DaMarius Cotton, Crime Prevention Officer for the Department of Public Safety at JSU, wants to make sure students know the importance of a parking decal.
“The only way to enter onto the campus is to have a parking decal. If you haven’t noticed, new entrance gates are being put up on Prentiss Street and Lynch Street, so that’s going to help provide more parking in AAC parking lot area for commuter students, ” said Cotton. According to DPS, JSU has nine available parking lots on campus for commuter students. They are located at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center, south of John A Peoples, Just Hall of Science, College of Education, T.B. Ellis Gym, Walter Payton Fitness & Recreation Center, Brady Baseball Field, on Short Street and next to the soccer field.
There are three parking lots for residential students that are located closest to the residence halls. Shuttle buses are also available for students who park off campus at the Mississippi e-Center. If you have to park far away from your location and need an escort, you can call campus police at 601-979-2580.
“Traffic laws are enforced on campus, therefore parking illegally will have your vehicle subject to being towed at your expense and at your fault,” said Cotton. “In order to keep your car from being towed make sure you do not park in any fire lanes, towing loading zone, on the street, reserved or on the university’s grass, and make sure to look for no parking signs. If you do those things you will not have to worry about having your car towed.”
Parking decals can be purchased through the Office of Financial Services and picked up from the Department of Public Safety.

Essence of a Lady Tiger is in conjunction with the Student Government Association at JSU and consists of approximately 50 junior and senior young ladies who have dedicated themselves to mentoring freshmen and sophomore young ladies as they matriculate through college.
EOLT President Nakoreya Roberson said the group has a bonding activity once a month and mentors meet individually with their mentees to offer academic support, career development and other advice to help them succeed at JSU. Upperclassman also will lead by example, by excelling in the classroom focusing on campus involvement and community engagement. EOLT focuses on increasing student graduation rates, decreasing dropout rate, building positive self-esteem and creating a relationship with local schools to build a positive mindset about JSU.
Comelia Walker, a freshman mathematics education major for Canton, Miss., is a new member.
“In my hometown they stress the fact that every female should be a lady. I want to stress that while I’m here in college and, once I grow up I want to be a role model. I also want adults to look at me as a positive young lady. So it’s great for them to have an organization like EOLT teaching us how become a lady,” said Walker.
The mission of EOLT is to promote poise, perfection, and excellence on the campus of JSU. The purpose is to enhance leadership and individualism among girls of all race, color, and classification while connecting with other females.
EOLT has a lot to offer this semester, such as community service, special events, and fundraising. Motivational Monday’s, is an event where the members dress for success in conjunction with Gentlemen’s Academy, every first and third Monday of each month.

Student leaders Give Freshmen Tips on Time Management
Tenesha Hughes
Staff Writer
Jackson State University freshmen are going through the changes of learning how to manage their time. Balancing homework, social life, participating in different clubs/organizations and even working a full time/part-time job can be difficult.
On Aug. 16, incoming freshmen were welcomed to their new ‘dear ol’ college home’ during Welcome Week. Last week kicked off the first week of school, and freshmen got a chance to see for themselves what the true “college life” experience is.
According to psychologytoday.com, time management is the ability to plan and control how you spend the hours in your day to effectively accomplish your goals. Poor time management can be related to procrastination, as well as problems with self-control. Skills involved in managing your time include planning for the future, setting goals, prioritizing tasks, and monitoring where your time actually goes.
JSU Student Government Association President Keonte Turner, a biology/pre-medicine major from Benton Harbor, Mich., shares his advice on how he keeps up with school work while finding time to still serve his student body.
“Take time to think about what is most important to you. Sort them out. Go for them while being aware of your workload; not overwhelming yourself,” said Turner.
He also added how he remains focused.
“The urge to have fun and enjoyment is the hardest thing about time management. If you let it, it can be a huge distraction. A constant reminder (via planners or cell phone alerts) of the goals at hand and ways to achieve them is a good way to counteract distractions,” said Turner
Miss Jackson State University, Anissa Butler, a senior chemistry major from Jackson, Miss., is someone who knows all about balancing work and school. From being a prancing J-Sette to staying true to her platform A.I.M. High, she still manages to maintain a high GPA.
“In order to keep up with class work I remind myself daily that I am a student first. I would not be here if I was not a student, ultimately pursuing a Bachelor’s degree. It’s been a slight struggle, but nothing I can’t handle or have not handled before. Sometimes I have to put aside Miss JSU work so that I can study and maintain the GPA I have,” said Butler.
She also shared five essential needs she uses that help her stay on task.
1. A planner – (or some kind of way to organize yourself) is extremely important!
2. Books – As expensive as they are, books are important. Your professor will not be able to cover everything in the book during a lecture. It is easier ways to understand concepts through reading.
3. A daily devotional or some source to help you keep up with your spirituality will help relieve some stress.
4. A Hobby or a way to express yourself (whether it is dancing, singing, painting, or listening to music) is another stress reliever. Get involved on campus!
5. Friends will be your support system! Find good ones that have the same goals as you.
Although school is important, find time for yourself. School can get tiring and stressful if you let it. Find time to hang with your friends, watch a movie, keep up on your favorite television show, and grab something to eat.

Jackson State University students thrift to stay " fresh"

Everyone knows the hit songs “Thrift Shop” by artist Macklemore. As you walk down the pedestrian walk way better known as, the “plaza” on Jackson State University’s campus you’ll notice a lot of students wearing unique and vintage clothing. Making many people wonder, has thrifting become a trend?.
According to urbandictionary.com, thrifting is when one visits several different thrift shops, second-hand shops, and vintage clothing stores in the hopes of buying several items of cheap and unusual clothing and other items. Many students say they shop at thrift stores because it helps them save money. Candace Fairley, a junior biology pre-med major from Magee, Miss., shared why she participates in thrifting.
“I thrift because it is cheaper than going to the mall. It is very convenient for me as a college student. Plus, thrifting requires imagination and creativity. It’s like playing dress up,” said Fairley.
Even though thrifting has been around for awhile, it seems to be really popular among college students. There are plenty of thrift shops in Jackson Miss. The most popular one is Silly Billy’s which has been around for two years. Billy, the owner of Silly Billy’s from Prentiss Miss., gave his advice on how to thrift properly.
“The best advice you can give someone who wants to go and thrift is to get the idea of retail mall out your head you cannot walk into a thrift shop and think mall or boutique”.
People who walk into thrift shops are thinking about regular clothing store. A lot of them have never been into a thrift shop before. They see their friends wearing something nice, and think that because they know how thrift that's easy. But, they come in thinking Banana Republic, Aeropostale, Gap, Nordstrom. Thrifting is not like that. It's more of an art, it takes time to learn the properly way and to look through the items. Thifting is a way for someone to show their style, it gives you the ability to be free and open minded and express the way you feel with a creative mind.
“Everybody wants to be vintage, but vintage is an art, not a trend because it captures a beautiful time in era,” said Fairley. A lot of times while thrifting you will only find one specific item that no one else would be able to get.
Kris Campbell, a junior mass communications major from Mobile, Ala. , shared why he chooses to wear clothes from the thrift.
“I do thrift just because I’m kind of old school. I admire Kid and Play type styles, and they don’t make that type of stuff anymore so I go to the thrift store to try and find it,” said Campbell.
Thrifting is very popular more so than ever, and many students believe that it is more of a trend than just fashion.
“I think thrifting is a trend, I think it’s going to go out of style though” said Campbell.
If you would like to jump start your thrift shopping and find stylish vintage clothing, you can contact Silly Billy’s at (601) 672-6693 they are opened Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

JSU CLASS OF 2017 BEGINS ‘FRESHMAN 15’ BATTLE
Tenesha Hughes
Staff writer
Many people say that college is not only a place where you gain knowledge but also pounds. Everyone has heard of the infamous Freshman 15 but is it real or fictional? Some students say that the Freshman 15 is real.
Being away from home many students find the freedom of being on their own can cause many temptations. Food choices suffer, from the long nights of staying up and grabbing unhealthy snacks, to the fast food places on campus such as Burger King, Pizza Hut, and even the selections on campus.
Some students even say that when the go to Wal-Mart they tend to pick out foods such as Hot Cheetos, cookies, candy, ice cream, etc. Students find themselves going into their refrigerator every single night.
Freshman 15 is a term used to describe the weight gain by freshmen during the first year of college, although according to kidshealth.org, studies show that students on average gain 3 to 10 pounds during their first two years of college. Most of this weight gain occurs during the first semester of freshman year.
“I think it is real because when you come to college no one is telling you don’t eat this or don’t eat that, you just eat all day and there is access to food 24/7,” said Julianna Robinson, a freshman biology pre-med major from Chicago, Ill.
Some students also say that the limited choice of food in Heritage Dining Hall does not help with their eating habits. In an effort to promote better nutrition, Food Services put up a Healthy for Life nutrition central guide that shows how to count the calories in the food they serve daily. There are also plenty of fruit baskets and smoothies to substitute for that sweet tooth students often have.
“It’s decent. All I really eat is the pizza and on certain days when they have the fried chicken and the fish is pretty good,” said Terry Rogers, a freshman chemistry pre-med major from Memphis, Tenn.
In addition to watching the diet, students can take advantage of the Walter Payton Recreation Center to get plenty of exercise to make sure to avoid the Freshman 15. The on campus facility is free to all Jackson State students, and also provides membership for the community, staff and faulty, at low prices.
Jason Robison, a certified personal trainer and recent graduate of JSU, said students should go to the campus gym, interact in intramural sports, and join student clubs to avoid gaining extra pounds.
Many students swap their high school sports for the studies and don’t realize how many calories they are in taking. Students say that because they are new, they don’t really know how to stay active so they are just in their dorm rooms most of the time eating the foods they bought.
Many freshmen also do not realize how important sleep is.
“At least seven hours is the most a normal person need to sleep so they can be well rested for the next day,” said Robison.
According to www.livescience.com , in a large analysis of the link, researchers looked at 36 studies, including 635,000 people around the world, and found that adults who didn’t get enough sleep were 50 percent more likely to be obese; and children who didn’t get enough sleep were 90 percent more likely to be obese, compared with those who got adequate sleep.

Jackson State University Students and Reality Tv :How "Real" Is It?

It seems all you see on your television screens now are reality TV shows, but where’s the REAL in Reality TV? Students at Jackson State University have mixed feelings about reality TV.
Reality TV is television programming in which there are no writers, actors or scripts. Instead, the shows focus on real events or situations. Some reality programming comes in the form of competitions shows, such as “Survivor” or “The Amazing Race.” Others, such as “Teen Mom” and “Hoarders” focus on specific lifestyles.
Reality TV is very popular on the campus of Jackson State. It is not uncommon to hear students talking about hit shows like “T.I. and Tiny a Family Hustle”, “Love & Hip Hop”, “Basketball Wives”, and more in the café, class, and in the dorms. But do these reality shows have an effect on student behavior?
The Huffington Post article, “What Has Reality TV Done to Young Women?,” reported that over the past decade, reality TV has seen a dramatic rise in popularity and with that, a colorful range of cultural topics have since emerged — from documenting the lives of housewives to teen moms. According to a recent study by the Girl Scouts Institute, 47% of girls and young women say they are regular viewers, with 30% saying they sometimes watch. Many girls — 86% — believe these shows often pit girls against each other to make the shows more exciting and 70% say they make people think it is ok to treat each other badly.
Chante Vinson, a freshman psychology major from Memphis, Tenn. agrees.
“Well, as far as “TI and Tiny”, it (reality TV) has a positive influence. “Basketball Wives” and the rest are negative because it’s mostly about fighting, drama between women and messy people. It’s like a replay of high school and a Madea play, in my eyes,” said Vinson
Vinson added: “It can make both sexes look as if it degrades our race, but on the other hand, it is an understanding between media and African-American men and women. We as a whole may understand, but sometimes it can be a challenge and negative view for us to the outside world looking in, in my opinion.”
Sunny Fridge, an assistant professor in the Department of Mass Communications and founder of TigerTv22, believes that reality TV shows can impact behavior in viewers
“It really just depends on if the show is negative. There are positive shows, but if you’re impressionable, what you see is what you believe,” said Fridge.
Fridge added: “I think that in terms of it (reality TV) being an educational tool, Mass Communications departments help because if they teach students to have media literacy then they’ll understand that everything they see is not true.”
Th’Marves Brooks, a freshman psychology major from Jackson, Miss., feels that some reality shows actually seem real.
“’TI and Tiny” is setting a great example, ‘Marrying the Game’ is a show that shows tough times and good times in relationships, so that’s a good example. ‘Basketball Wives’, ‘Love and Hip-Hop’ are horrible examples, because it shows the bad things that we need to keep to ourselves,” said Brooks.
Wherever you stand on the issue, reality TV is on the rise and does not seem to be leaving your television screens anytime soon. According to Nielsen.com, reality TV first made an appearance in the top 10 rankings in 2000, and since the 2002-2003 season has consistently captured the largest percentage of the audience watching the top 10 broadcast programs. In 2012, of the top 10 primetime programs, 5 were unscripted shows.

Students save The Shave For "No Shave November"

The month of November is a time where most college students are getting ready for final exams and eagerly awaiting the Thanksgiving break. But November is also known as Cancer Awareness month and students on the campus of Jackson State University are participating in “No Shave November” to show their support.
According to ubrandictionary.com, this is an event to raise awareness, usually for prostate cancer, but also for men’s health in general. The month of November has been dubbed Movember, and participants are dubbed either Mo Bros or Mo Sistas; Mo being short for Moustache.
To participate, you start off with a clean shave on Oct. 31st, and do not shave your moustache for the entire month of November, and then resume your regularly scheduled shaves on Dec. 1st. While this is generally a men’s event, women are welcome to show support as well, via other means.
Aspen Wilson, a freshman mass communications major from Memphis Tenn., is one of those students who is participating.
“I support men’s health. I am a health addict and I absolutely love my body. It’s my way of wide-spreading the issues and importance of staying healthy,” said Wilson.
Not every student is making the decision to participate in the movement, because they already do not shave, regardless of the month. Harold Johnson, a senior integrated marketing major from Chicago Ill. is one of those students.
“I don’t shave because it fights the social norm, especially in business, to be clean shaven. I feel that my beard shouldn’t dictate whether I’m capable of fulfilling certain job requirements,” said Johnson.
He added, “Plus I think its looks pretty cool, so everyone who’s healthy enough to grow their hair out, please do so!”
A lot of people make the personal decision to participate because they feel it’s the “it” thing to do when the month of November rolls around, some don’t know the true meaning of why they should join the movement.
Ladies, don’t think you can’t join the movement because hair does grow on your body too. The most common place for hair to grow is legs and underarms and there are some females who are also participating.
Although Shelsie Nichols, a senior biology/ pre-therapy major from Jackson Miss. said she will not be a part of the movement.
“I just feel like girls shouldn’t participate in not shaving the hair off their body, it’s just natural for girls to shave anyways,” said Nichols.
Nichols added: “I do understand that it’s for a good cause, and it’s great if there are some girls participating.
According to thejambar.com, in 2004, the Movember foundation was founded and the fundraiser raised $40,000 the first year. Since then, the movement has grown exponentially internationally. The growth the foundation has experienced was evident last year when 854,288 men in more than 15 countries registered to grow moustaches in honor of Movember. Last year, those men and their moustaches were able to raise $126.3 million, which was distributed to various organizations that support men’s health, like the LIVESTRONG Foundation.
