NBA legend and California-based entrepreneur Earvin “Magic” Johnson told students and faculty at Jackson State University Tuesday that he will “do business” in the capital city.
Johnson was in Jackson to speak about his personal success and to offer advice about education and entering the workforce.
“I’m definitely going to do some business through (Jackson Mayor Tony Yarber and JSU President Carolyn Myers) here in Jackson, so you’ll see me back in Jackson and I look forward to that,” he said.
Johnson did not announce any specific plan or time frame in which he might claim a stake in Jackson, and it was not the first time Johnson has made similar remarks.
“I promise you all I’ll be back,” he said in a 2002 conference in Jackson. “We’re going to do business here in the city of Jackson.”
Nothing sprang from Johnson’s 2002 promise.
Johnson’s company, Johnson Development Group, focuses on urban redevelopment across the country. In his 2002 trip to Jackson, he suggested the possibility of opening a Starbucks Coffee location in the city.
Attendees of Johnson’s speech Tuesday cheered when he made the announcement, and multiple people expressed excitement about the possibility of Johnson investing in the community.
“Magic is an amazing person who is really genuine and down to earth,” JSU Student Body President Keonte Turner said. “Speaking on behalf of the students, it means a lot for him to be here. It shows us that there’s people outside of Jackson that really care about our development.”
