Today I along with my Print media students and Color coded students in Bridge to College, took an exclusive tour inside of Google Pittsburgh!... Let me just tell you AMAZING!... A lot of people never get to see inside of Google. In fact many wonder how they come up with so many different apps and features on the web. Google offers Google talk, Google search, Google book, Google finance etc. Most of us know Google for it's popular search engine, but there is so much!
Inside of Google Pittsburgh, I learned that in order for the workers to concentrate effectively, they have a very free and expressive workplace. There are about 2-3 different eating spaces, with healthy selections of foods, such as fruits, granola bars, energy bars, water, energy drinks and more! They also have games to help the workers take their mind off of work for a little while, there is a pool table, basketball games, video games and plenty other of choices.
One thing I noticed is that, you will find so much diversity inside of Google, which is why I believe they are so successful. Because, like our tour guide mentioned, you don't want everyone who works in the same workplace to all think the same. Diversity makes for a more diverse thinking environment.
I know, you may be thinking how can I get a job at Google? Well, our tour guide also told us that if you want to work for Google make sure you know about Computer Science.
Computer Science according to www.cs.mtu.edu Computer science is a discipline that spans theory and practice. It requires thinking both in abstract terms and in concrete terms. The practical side of computing can be seen everywhere. Nowadays, practically everyone is a computer user, and many people are even computer programmers. Getting computers to do what you want them to do requires intensive hands-on experience. But computer science can be seen on a higher level, as a science of problem solving. Computer scientists must be adept at modeling and analyzing problems. They must also be able to design solutions and verify that they are correct. Problem solving requires precision, creativity, and careful reasoning.
So, pretty much if you are interested in working for Google, you should start learning how to code. There are plenty of websites out here that will teach you how. Code.org is a great one, it was recommended to me by our tour guide. I would advise that if your're in college be sure to take a couple of Computer Science classes. Some people are born with natural talent to learn quickly and on their own, but many of us like myself need a little more help, and that's what college is for. Of course, you can use the website I recommended, but if you like the more hands on approach college is the way to go.
A couple of other interesting things that the workers at Google have are massage rooms, YES! that's right MASSAGE. The workers have the luxury to go just a couple of floors down to get a massage. Also you can get your car detailed in the parking garage, while your're still working, haircuts are also available. If those things don't sound cool enough for you, I don't know what does!
