Juicing is slowly becoming the new thing to do; it’s healthier and tastier than any other juice you’ll find at your local grocery store. Most people prefer juicing over making a smoothie. Now, I know what you’re thinking. What makes juicing so much better than a smoothie? Well, I met with a couple of guys from JuiceUp 412 and they gave me just the information I need to know about juicing.
Knowledge Hudson from Jackson MI, informed me the benefits of juicing and how it has changed his life tremendously. Hudson works with JuiceUp 412 which is a social enterprise company geared towards educating people on how to be healthier, by drinking delicious and nutritional juices which they sell or you can make your own.
I think you’ll be surprised when you hear how many great benefits you can get by purchasing a juicer and using it the correct way. We all know how healthy a fruit or vegetable is, because as we’re told when we’re younger always have something green on our plate, or “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Well once you juice your veggies and fruits they become even richer with vitamins.
“I’m actually a cancer survivor so I went through the process of chemo therapy, and from that experience I did a lot of studies, and I learned that people get diagnosed with cancer or die from diabetes, these impacts form heart issues mostly because they’re eating the wrong foods”, said Hudson.
We really don’t know how important it is to eat right until something happens to us. Or when we visit the doctor and they share some unexpected bad news, we weren’t hoping to hear.
Hudson shares more, “I got into juicing because, it can be used as a preventative there are different things like ascorbic acid or the things found in lemon, oranges and carrots that will actually fight off different infectious diseases that help your body stay strong. Where as if you eat foods that take away the nutrients then your body is weak and it's more suitable to getting diseases.”
When juicing it can cause you to lose weight. Which is why I believe it’s one of the reason it’s becoming so popular. Because, we all know how hard it can be to lose those few pounds, we've been dying to get off. With juicing you can do just that, and gain health benefits from it as well.
Jamal Lane from North Carolina, also works with Juice Up and he talks about how juicing changed his life in a positive way.
“I got into it from a movie that we watched on Netflix called “Fat Sick and Nearly Dead” where this over weight guy started to fast off of fruits and vegetable, and after I came down a 100 plus pounds I just stuck with it and it's been doing well for me, and that’s how I got into it” ,said Lane.
Knowledge and Jamal shared the importance of juicing, and the nutritional benefits through a juicing demonstration with Bridge to College students. The students got to see firsthand how to use the juicer and how to cut the fruit when making a juice. They also got to enjoy the juices during the demonstration.
“We were also working on the actual fundamentals of making the juice and the mechanics as far as the actual cutting to the end product of the juice. And some of the mechanics as far as keeping it ice cold making sure that your motor or juicer or blender, or whatever you use doesn't over exhaust itself and get hot so the minerals and vitamins don’t die”, said Lane.
Hudson also said, “We were talking about the nutritional benefits of juicing and how to get your nutrients through juicing verses through the digestive process. That’s what the doctor or dentist tells you, to chew your food to a liquid paste but we try to skip that instead of having to chew all that food you can just juice and get your ascorbic acid, iron, calcium, vitamin A and those sorts of things.”
JuiceUp 412 is partners with Pittsburgh, PA own Bar Marco located in East Liberty 124 South Highland Ave. Bar Marco is a bar that sells liquor and cock tails in the evening time, and JuiceUp 412 sells their juices during the day. They are also partners with Livingmore group, which has a weekly food cooking club at Obama high school in Pittsburgh. They come down and teach the children how to juice and help raise 3,000 dollars towards buying the children a food truck and having access to fresh fruit and fresh vegetables.
