Bridge to college (B2C) students are sharpening their literacy, mathematical and life skills this summer. The 6-week program began on June 23, 2014 and will last through Aug 1, 2014. The program takes place in the community of Homewood, which is located in Pittsburgh, PA. B2C is a program of the Homewood Children's Village (HCV), a placed based initiative whose mission is to "simultaneously improve the lives of Homewood’s children and to reweave the fabric of the community in which they live."
The purpose of B2C is to promote a "college going culture" amongst the students. The program encourages students to attend college after high school. It supports students in their efforts to achieve meaningful and promising outcomes and empowers youth to become agents of community change and transformation. A stipend and community service options are given to the students who participate in the program.
Students have the opportunity to visit colleges and see first hand how it feels to be on a college campus.
The program currently has more than 25 students participating in this summers activities. Different courses are offered including English, Math, College-Prep and Career-Related Project classes.
These courses are designed to help students go forth with skills to help them expand their future options. The project courses are designed to be career focused, whereas students will learn more about careers related to their project and gain a better sense of whether or not it might be a good fit for them.
In the print media course students are learning how to create articles that will be soon be published in the HCV newsletter. A blog is also being created that will showcase the students' work through the course of the summer program.
This course is taught by me. I have the pleasure of working with 6 students, Mon-Thurs.
The purpose of the B2C Summer Print Media Project is to continue the work started last summer through the HCV office of Community Affairs. Last summer, students had the opportunity to write articles for the HCV newsletter. This summer, in addition to generating content for the newsletter, my students will learn more about the world of mass communications in general. As a part of the learning process students in my class will produce the following:
The link to the student blog is posted below. Please keep in mind that the students are still in the learning process and will be developing the blog as the the summer continues. Check back periodically to see the progress. Thank you.
