On Saturday July 5, 2014 a celebration with live music and a natural hair fashion show was held in Brooklyn New York at the Brooklyn Museum. This free event along with several others was sponsored by Target's First Saturdays. Other events also took place such as sidewalk art by The City Kids, A Comedy Show, filming of Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" , and a performance by R&B duo Nina Sky "Move Ya Body".
DJ Michael July talked about his new book Afros: A Celebration of Natural hair. This summit gave African American women the chance to share thoughts, and express how happy they are to embrace their African Roots through their hair.
I had the opportunity to meet with Michaela Angela Davis, a Image Active, Writer, and Editorial Brand Manager at BET. You may have seen her in the Documentary "Dark Girls" and also other shows on BET Network.
Davis helped co host along with Actor, Entrepreneur, Musician, Writer, and Healer Malik Yoba. Davis shared her own personal experience and shared knowledge about connecting with your hair.
She tweeted " True to natural hair not new to natural hair honored to be with legends" and also shared photos from the event on her Instagram page. @MichaelaAngelaD
Females at the event shared their stories about their natural hair experiences .
"wearing my hair natural I discovered self acceptance, self love and self liberation".
" I like to feel like myself not someone else"
"Natural hair to me equals freedom and interventions, because what you see is what you get it. It says this is me and this is who i am. Like being naked and unashamed reveals who I really am with no apologies and you gotta love me for who I am or honey just walk away".
The event was very eye opening, and informative. So ladies remember to embrace you natural roots and stay true to you!
